Bakwena has completed 12km of the upgrade between Pretoria and Rustenburg. The upgrading of another 20km has begun, which begins where the current upgrade ends on the N4, towards Rustenburg, to the Marikana Interchange, and a short section east to the R512 interchange. This will dual the carriageway from the R512 Interchange to the Marikana Interchange. The first 12km was completed within budget and was finished at the end of March 2011. This new dual carriageway will certainly increase the traffic capacity of the relevant section of the road as well as provide adequate overtaking opportunities and ample run off areas in the case of an emergency.
The construction of this divided dual carriage freeway is on schedule. Upgrading of further sections towards Rustenburg will depend on the growth in traffic volumes.
Upgrading of the N4 between Rustenburg and Zeerust which covers 120km of road will hopefully commence towards the end of 2011.
There were very few accidents within the vicinity during construction of the first section and none of the serious accidents were construction related. Bakwena will be restoring vegetation in the areas affected in accordance with our environmental policy. The toll tariffs remain unaffected by these upgrades and we would like to thank the public for their patience during the construction of the first section.
