Mandela Day is an important day in South Africa where people are encouraged to lift a burden from others and make impactful changes in their communities.
In honour of Nelson Mandela Day on 18 July when this day is celebrated, Bakwena N1N4 toll concessionaire, this year focussed on education. Supporting two schools along its route: Thuto Ke Matla in Groot Marico and Reebone Secondary School in Swartruggens.
At Thuto Ke Matla, Bakwena gifted 30 mattresses for their matric hostel. These mattresses will significantly assist the 2024 class in attending extra lessons and get the personal attention needed to help them prepare for their preliminary and final exams. In addition, Bakwena sponsored the hostel fees for the rest of the year for two orphaned matric pupils.
Continuing their support for matriculants, Bakwena, in partnership with its Operator, Pt Operational Services, donated 96 double school desks to the matric class of Reebone Secondary. This contribution allows 190 Grade 12 learners to sit comfortably at desks, rather than the floor, during their exams.
“It was an incredibly humbling experience for Bakwena to improve the learning conditions for these learners and inspire and encourage them to continue to work hard and do well in the upcoming exams.
“The youth are the future of South Africa, and we are proud that we could make a meaningful difference in helping them to achieve their goals. We believe that we have a responsibility as a business to have a meaningful impact on many aspects of the lives of people in the communities surrounding the N1N4 route,” says Solomon Kganyago, Bakwena’s Chief Operating Officer.
