Bakwena N1N4 toll is pleased to advise motorists that the 1st phase of construction and rehabilitation of the N4 covering P34/Koster to Swartruggens is complete. Only a double seal needs to take place which we can only carry out when the climate is warmer. The project construction cost to date is R114.7 million and expected construction cost is R118.5million.
Phase 2 started in June 2013 and is an 18 month contract. The section covered is from the P34/Koster to Bietjie Berg. The same construction process that was done for phase 1 is being carried out in phase 2. The road is being rehabilitated through the construction of new layer works, new wearing coarse and some improvements are being undertaken from a geometric point of view. The estimated completion date for these works is December 2014. The total cost of this project is estimated at R156 million.
During these works two-way traffic will be maintained throughout the construction phase with a few exceptions from time to time. Please for your own, your fellow road user’s and the workmen on the road‘s safety ensure you adhere to the speed restrictions along this section as there are construction vehicles and people working along the road.
The next section between Swartruggens and Zeerust is due to be rehabilitated and upgraded from January 2014. This is an 18 month contract.
To date R2,2 million has been spent on the regeneration of Swartruggens and includes upgrading of sidewalks, storm water systems, intersections etc. Jeffares and Green Consulting Engineers kindly donated R300 000 to this cause. This work was not required in terms of the Concession Contract. Bakwena did this out of its own free will and Jeffares and Green assisted out of their free will.
Bakwena appeals to our road users to please be on the alert for veld fires at this time of the year. Various measures are in place to prevent fires from starting such as keeping the grass in our road reserve short by undertaking regular grass cuttings. We also appeal to motorists to please not throw your cigarette ends out of your window as this could start a fire. Should you approach smoke or fog along the route, gradually slow down before the smoke/fog and proceed at a slow speed.
Bakwena would like to urge our road users to please drive safely and not endanger your life or those of your families. We would also like to thank you for your patience during the construction works.
