Operational Management:

The maintenance and operation of the Bakwena N1 and N4 freeways are under the jurisdiction of Pt Operational Services (Pt Ops), an independent company based in Pretoria. Pt Ops is entrusted with multiple responsibilities to ensure the smooth functioning of the Bakwena Toll Route.

These include:

  • Collecting tolls
  • Maintaining roadside furniture
  • Repairing potholes
  • Painting lines
  • Cutting grass
  • Managing vegetation
  • Maintaining the drainage system
  • Collecting refuse along the Bakwena routes

These responsibilities ensure that the Bakwena N1/N4 toll road remains in prime condition for the duration of the concession period, which extends till 2031.

Rehabilitation and Upgrading:

While Pt Ops handles the routine maintenance, Bakwena is tasked with the periodic rehabilitation, based on data from a Pavement Management System, and road upgrading, including the expansion of lanes, bridges, and interchanges.
