N1 Rehab between Proefplaas Interchange to Pumulani Main Line Plaza
Bakwena is progressing well with the major rehabilitation works on the N1 between the Proefplaas Interchange and the Pumulani Main Line Toll Plaza, highlighting safety, efficiency and long-term resilience along this critical transport corridor.
This R276 million project, awarded to Roadmac Surfacing, commenced in August 2025 and is expected to be completed by November 2026. The 15-month contract forms part of Bakwena’s broader N1N4 rehabilitation programme.
The scope of work includes the rehabilitation of the slow lane of both the northbound and southbound carriageways; the rehabilitation of the Stormvo?l and the Zambezi Interchanges and sections of the Proefplaas Interchange, and an asphalt overlay of the entire road surface. Replacement of the road signage and repairs to the concrete lined drainage systems also forms part of this project. These upgrades are designed to restore the structural strength, improve the driving conditions, and extend the lifespan of the road in line with international engineering standards.
Construction is taking place during both the day and night. While lane closures are required in both directions, Bakwena is implementing strict traffic management measures to minimise delays and maintain safe travel for all road users. While short-term inconvenience may occur, road users are encouraged to stay informed about traffic accommodation and lane closures by following @bakwenan1n4 on X, where real-time updates are frequently shared.

N4 Dualling between Buffelspoort and Dr Moroka Interchanges
Bakwena is pleased to report strong progress on its N4 dualling project, reaffirming its commitment to improving road safety, reducing congestion, and enhancing mobility along this critical transport corridor.
The major upgrade of the N4 between the Buffelspoort and Dr Moroka interchanges in Rustenburg, valued at R1.33 billion, is progressing well. This project, which commenced in March 2024, is scheduled over 43 months and aims to significantly reduce congestion and improve road safety by expanding the roadway to two lanes in each direction.
A key milestone has already been achieved with the early completion of two major bridge extensions. The Kruger interchange bridge and the Helen Joseph interchange bridge were extended to accommodate the new dual carriageway configuration, with both structures completed ahead of schedule.

N4 Rehab between Zeeerust and Botswana border
An important rehabilitation project is underway on the N4 between Zeerust and the Botswana border, aimed at improving road safety and ensuring reliable travel for communities, businesses, and cross-border road users. The 21-month project commenced in September 2025, including a three-month site establishment period. Construction activities began in February 2026 and are scheduled for completion by June 2027.
Motorists can expect temporary traffic disruptions, including lane closures of approximately five kilometres in each direction. Traffic is being managed using stop/go systems, with possible delays of up to 15 minutes per direction. Road users are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time.
