Bakwena is currently adding an additional carriageway on the N4 between the R512 West and Marikana Interchange (B2236). This is phase 1 of the planned 4 phases for the upgrade of 38km and will also include the widening of bridges at the same time. Construction of phase 1 started late 2009 and is expected to be complete by August 2010. Construction of phase 2, 3 and 4 will follow in 2011, 2012 and 2013.
In March 2010, Bakwena will start adding additional lanes at the Kameeldrift Interchange (N1 and N4).
The upgrade of the existing t-junction to a full freeway interchange at Rustenburg west will be undertaken by the North West Province and Rustenburg Municipality as part of their 2010 strategy.
Periodic and routine maintenance continues to be carried out on the whole road including repairs to plaza slabs.
This construction will have no impact on the foll fees. The annual toll fee increases are as per our contract with the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) which is linked to CPI. Bakwena borrowed the funds from the bank for the upgrade and these funds will be repaid back to the bank out of the toll fees collected. There will be little disruption to the traffic during the construction period.
We would like to thank all road users for their co-operation and patience while the improvements are carried out.
