Bakwena, the toll concessionaire, is committed to supporting the socio- economic development of the country. Not only does Bakwena provide world-class infrastructure on the Bakwena N1N4 route, but it also strives to have a positive, sustainable, and meaningful impact on the lives of people in vulnerable communities along this route.
In line with this commitment, Bakwena introduces Patrick Netshiungani, a remarkable individual who has embarked on a transformative journey with the company, starting from high school and progressing to university. Hailing from Hammanskraal, a disadvantaged township within the Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality, Patrick comes from a community grappling with multiple challenges such as HIV, unemployment, crime, drugs, and teenage pregnancy.
Through Bakwena’ s Ultimate Challenges project, which focuses on providing life and study skills in schools, Patrick found the support he needed to overcome his hardships and successfully complete his high school education. This accomplishment enabled him to enrol at UNISA, pursuing a Bachelor of Law (LLB) degree. However, driven by his passion for education and inspired by the impact of the Ultimate Challenges project, Patrick made a bold decision to switch his field of study to a Bachelor of Education at the University of Pretoria.
Reflecting on his journey, Patrick says, “When I received assistance from Ultimate Challenges and Bakwena, I was at a breaking point. I had lost hope that someday I would be able to escape the difficulties I faced.
“Through their interventions and support, I found a renewed purpose and the will to live. I believe my community lacks proper role models and inspiring figures for the kids. With my teaching degree, I can contribute to addressing some of the challenges faced by my community. The sponsorship from Bakwena has truly changed my life for the better, and without it, I might have remained homeless indefinitely.”
Patrick’s commitment to his education has been unwavering. He has successfully completed both his Bachelor’s and Honours degrees in Education and is currently pursuing a Master’s of Social Science degree, specialising in History.
Expressing his gratitude, Patrick extended his heartfelt thanks to Bakwena, saying, “I am deeply grateful to Bakwena for everything they have done for me and for transforming my life. I often reminisce about the time when I was a homeless street kid and how my life turned around after getting involved in Bakwena’ s Corporate Social Investment initiative, the Ultimate Challenges project. Bakwena and its partners are making significant strides in assisting and guiding learners to stay on the right path.”
Bakwena remains dedicated to uplifting vulnerable communities and empowering individuals like Patrick Netshiungani. Through initiatives like the Ultimate Challenges project, Bakwena continues to foster positive change, inspire hope, and create a brighter future for the next generation.
