In September 2018, the Pilansberg National Park was hit by a huge wildfire that spread from outside the park into the park and as a result of this wildfire, the Mankwe Hide thatch caught fire burnt the structure and screen fence to the ground.
The Pilansberg Wildlife Trust was requested to assist with raising of funds for the hide to be rebuilt. The total cost of repairs to the hide was estimated at R770 000, Bakwena and it’s contractor, Basella Construction were able to reduce this cost by R200 000 as well as contribute an amount of R50 000 towards the rebuild. Others in the rebuild include the field rangers, Ivory Tree and Legacy Lodges guides to name but a few.
The official opening of the hide took place Friday 10 th January 2020 and saw many of the sponsors in attendance. The hide provides a comfortable place to wait for the perfect photo opportunity as well as provides an opportunity to view the wildlife and birds in their natural habitat. Pilansberg Wildlife Trust Perry Dell says “thank you once again to each and everyone that contributed to make this awesome hide possible. The Bakwena N1N4 toll road was pivotal in making this hide rebuild possible. Thanks to the workers at Basella Construction that built the hide in the blazing sun, with wildlife including lions, crocodiles and hippo’s all around you. You did a fantastic job!”.
