Bakwena N1N4 toll road in partnership with the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, ER24, Imperial logistics and Active Education embarked on a Pedestrian Road Safety Campaign recently held at the Ke Ya Rona Mall in Bapong.
The campaign highlighted road safety awareness relating to pedestrians which included illegal stopping and pedestrians crossing on freeways as well as encouraging animal owners around Bapong to keep their animals fenced to prevent them from roaming onto the freeway and end up causing crashes.
Bakwena public relations manager, Charmaine van Wyk, says the campaign is aimed at encouraging community members to use the pedestrian bridges to cross the N4. “It is illegal for pedestrians to be on the freeways. We also want to raise awareness around the rules of the road in general and explain the purpose of the blue kilometre board markers and the 0800 BAKWENA number.”
Not only does the campaign highlight pedestrian safety, community members are given tips on keeping safe in general. “This includes safety tips such as wearing seatbelts in vehicles, wearing reflective clothing at night and safe crossing of roads, “says van Wyk. Notably, adds van Wyk, the blue marker boards are situated at 200 metre intervals on the N1N4 toll road to assist motorists in distress and help them identify their position on the road when they need help. “The boards depict which national road motorists are on as well as what section of the road the are on and the kilometre distance,” she says.
With Easter coming up, the roads are expected to be busier than usual. Bakwena urges motorists to take special care when travelling during this period and to apply the following safety measures:
• Ensure your car is roadworthy
• Plan your journey in advance to avoid peak traffic
• Stick to the speed limit
• Maintain a safe following distance of at least three seconds
• Don’t drive under the influence of alcohol
• Ensure you get enough sleep before a long journey
• Stop and rest at least every two hours or 200km
• Use the information on the blue kilometre board markers when reporting accidents or requesting
assistance
• Make sure you have your cash or credit card handy before reaching the plaza
• Acquire an e-tag to minimise delays
