Bakwena regrets to inform the road users that the Kroondal toll plazas (on and off-ramps) will be temporarily closed for a period of approximately five weeks starting from Monday the 2nd July 2012. The affected ramps of the interchange are the on and off-ramps with toll plazas only i.e. the two west facing ramps. This is due to rehabilitation work being carried out at the plazas, specifically the replacement of the concrete slabs which is an on-going process to improve and maintain our asset.
Ancillary upgrade work will also be performed as well since the plaza is closed. Kroondal toll plazas are single lanes therefore the ramps need to be closed as we cannot accommodate traffic throughput safely while undertaking these works.
Traffic continuing on the N4 will not be affected. Alternative route pamphlets (attached) will be distributed at the Kroondal ramps and Marikana plaza in both directions from the 14th June 2012 alerting the road users to the closure and providing an alternative route for those that use the Kroondal ramps. The alternative route pamphlet was also distributed at various businesses on the R104, the R24 and the Kroondal CBD. Road signs will be placed on the N4 and the R104 to forewarn the road users and the alternative route will be clearly signposted.
To ensure the safety of our road users on the alternative route, Bakwena has done some remedial works on the R104 such as the reinstatement of the roadpaintmarking (centreline and intersections), some minor gravel shoulder repairs along the alternative route and the filling of potholes and some dangerous undulations on the road. This unavoidable closure has been thoroughly discussed with the Traffic police who will be providing assistance during peak times as and when necessary.
Bakwena has engaged with business and community leaders who have noted the inconvenience but they are appreciative of the necessity of the planned road works.
We apologize for any inconvenience caused while we undertake this rehabilitation.
