Company Profile

Bakwena is a relatively new company, but has already touched the lives of thousands of motorists - by providing them with a safer and more efficient road, assisting in roadside emergencies and introducing Electronic Toll Collection [ETC] to South Africa.

Company Profile

Bakwena signed the Concession Contract to design, build, finance, operate and maintain the Platinum Toll Highway on 4 October 2000, with the effective commencement date of 28 August 2001

Bakwena is backed by a strong grouping of local and international companies who have experience in all aspects of running a successful toll road concession. The sponsor-group is led by Dragados, the world's leading operator of toll road and transport infrastructure concessions and Murray & Roberts, a well established South African construction company. The South African Infrastructure Fund and COFIDES (Spain) are the major non-sponsor shareholders.

The Initial Construction Works is being undertaken by a Design & Construct Joint Venture (Platinum JV) consisting of Dragados of Spain and the local firms of Murray & Roberts, Concor and Wilson Bailey Holmes-Ovcon (WBHO).

The toll road is being operated and maintained by Pt Operational Services (Pty) Ltd, a special purpose company comprising Dragados, Abertis and Tolcon.
