Why do we have to pay tolls when we pay our taxes?

  • The user pay principal allows for roads to be provided sooner than traditional tax based revenues.
  • The introduction of the toll road system in South Africa is in line with trends worldwide.

  • Ensures dedicated funding for maintenance of the road.

Why is Bakwena allowed to make profits?

  • Bakwena is providing a substantial service in building, operating and maintaining the road.
  • The profit to be made by the Bakwena shareholders has been pegged at a market-related level, any profit over and above this figure will be progressively shared with SANRAL.

What will the toll tariffs I pay be used for?

The toll fees collected will be allocated to the commitments Bakwena made in approximately the following proportions:

  • Initial construction works 22%
  • Future construction works 18%
  • Operation and maintenance 17%
  • Services and fees 10%
  • Interest payments 33%
